This book allows the reader a glimpse into Tambu's life as she grows, not only as a girl through adolescence, but also as a colonized person navigating an unfamiliar world in 1960s Rhodesia. By illustrating Tambu's struggle to live in the way she desires with the limited options available to her, Dangarembga is also able to portray colonization and patriarchal oppression more broadly. Such a lovely book, compellingly written.
