Prints and Drawings of Kathe Kollwitz

by: Kathe Kollwitz

This is an excellent collection that traces the arc of experimental styles throughout Kaithe Kollwitz's life. Kollwitz bridged the haunting, empathetic realism of the mid-19th century with the drama of European Modern expressionism. As a constant theme throughout her work, the body becomes the primary building block for compositional expression. The bodies of individual actors are balanced against the body politic with a masterful use of chiaroscuro, light and shadow, giving emotional and social weight to her subjects. Kollwitz is an artist you can return to again and again for her skill, imagination, and raw social honesty.
